To better leverage the exemplary power of outstanding engineers, improve the quality of cultivating outstanding engineers in the future, promote the contributions of engineers and the engineering community to global sustainable development to the world, and further deepen the international cooperation, the UNESCO International Centre for Engineering Education (ICEE) and the National Graduate College for Engineers at Tsinghua University jointly hosted a series of events on “Cultivating Outstanding Engineers from a Global Perspective”.

On July 6, 2024, the first event was held in Beijing with the theme of “AI Empowering Energy Transition for Sustainable Development”, exploring how to promote global sustainable development through engineering education and working in collaboration to embrace future challenges.

Prof. Dr. Juergen Kretschmann, our president, attended this event and gave the speech “Innovative Engineering Education for a Better Future”.

During the conference, Prof. Dr. Kretschmann has emphasized that in applied science majors such as engineering, theory and practice can be perfectly combined, just like the “work-integrated” teaching model introduced by Hainan Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences (abbr. BiUH), where students are taught with a comprehensive strategy of combining “theory and practice” from the very beginning of their university education. This teaching method is more effective than the traditional teaching model that students shall learn theories first and a few years later they start practicing. The “work-integrated” teaching model can ensure that the talents cultivated by BiUH are highly matched with the employment demands of the enterprises, and it can also continuously supply more innovative, inter-disciplinary and application-oriented talents to the economy field and the society.

The event focused on exploring the necessity of cultivating outstanding engineers, which is crucial for promoting the improvement of high quality productive forces, especially in the area of AI empowering energy transition and promoting sustainable development. Participants interacted with domestic and foreign experts and gained an in-depth understanding of the latest trends and future challenges in the AI and new energy industries.
