Recently, SONG Meixi, a 2025 student majoring in Industrial Engineering at Hainan Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences (BiUH), was awarded the National First Prize in the Undergraduate Division of the 2026 National College Students Data Statistics and Analysis Competition. This achievement reflects the University’s commitment to cultivating application-oriented talents and integrating data analysis with practical learning.
The National College Students Data Statistics and Analysis Competition is one of China’s major academic competitions for university students. It aims to strengthen students’ ability to apply statistical theories, data analysis methods, and modern information technologies to solve practical problems while enhancing their competencies in statistical modelling, data processing, data visualization, and analytical report writing. The competition provides an important platform for developing innovative, practice-oriented talents in data statistics and analysis.
Under the supervision of Dr. Ahmad Ali, SONG Meixi conducted research on practical statistical analysis problems, completing tasks including statistical modelling, data processing, result analysis, and data visualization. Her outstanding performance earned her the National First Prize in the Undergraduate Division.
As a student majoring in Industrial Engineering, participating in the National College Student Data Analysis Competition was quite a challenge for me. Statistical modeling, data processing, and result visualization—these topics were not emphasized in my specialized courses, and only when I actually began preparing did I realize how much more I needed to learn than I had imagined.
The preparation process was essentially a combination of learning and doing. Whenever I encountered unfamiliar concepts, I first consulted reference materials; if I still didn’t understand after researching, I would seek guidance from my teachers and then continue studying further based on their advice. In addition to systematically learning statistical knowledge, I also tried to gain practical experience by writing analytical reports and participating in internship projects, ensuring that theoretical knowledge was truly applied in practice.
The most intense period was the final stretch, when schoolwork and competition preparation piled up at once, leaving only fragmented moments for studying. Several times I sat down to review at night, only to look outside and find it already dawn. The next day, though exhausted, I attended class with a sense of relief—because I had finally figured out that problem I’d been stuck on the night before.
I’ve participated in many competitions before and experienced numerous failures, but looking back, those unsuccessful attempts were also forms of accumulation—just settling down in a different way.
This award feels more like a reminder to me: the greatest gain from participating in competitions lies in continuous learning and persistent effort. I’m grateful to my teachers who have offered guidance and support along the way, and I hope to carry this momentum forward.
The Industrial Engineering programme at BiUH is an interdisciplinary discipline integrating engineering, management science, information technology, and economic analysis.
